This page is the knowledge map for the insurance topics in the Xiaopoxian Knowledge Network. It does not explain how any particular policy works; instead it shows which sister sites cover each of the three topics (protection life insurance, savings and investment-linked policies, and jumbo life cover with premium financing), the order in which to read them, and what you should be able to answer after each step. The focus is Singapore; Hong Kong rules are flagged separately. The core dependency between the three topics is this: your protection gap determines whether you need a savings or investment-linked policy at all, and the cash value and surrender curve determine whether financing is even worth discussing. Reverse the order and any comparison becomes distorted.

Reading order at a glance

The table below breaks the three topics into seven steps. Each step lists only one or two pages to "read first" and "read next"; all in-depth content sits on the sister sites.

Step Question to answer Read first Read next You should then be able to answer Common cost of skipping it
1 Product landscape What types of insurance exist in Singapore and which risks each addresses xiaopoxian.com.sg/product-landscape xiaopoxian.com.sg/before-you-buy How protection, savings and investment functions differ Using a savings product as protection and ending up underinsured

Topic 1: Protection life insurance

Why it comes first: Protection life insurance answers the question "if death, critical illness or disability strikes, how long can the family's cash flow hold up?" Savings and investment-linked policies often include death cover too, but unless you have worked out the gap first, you cannot tell whether their sum assured is "enough" or merely "incidental".

Which site covers what:

Site Language Questions covered Read first
term.com.sg Chinese Term life sum assured, factors affecting premiums, riders, conversion options, CPF Dependants' Protection Scheme (DPS), key person and loan protection /sum-assured, /cpf-dps
wholelife.com.sg Chinese Participating whole life, multipliers, limited pay, bonuses and cash value /bonuses-cash-value
insurancesg.si English The protection system for expatriates, gaps between group and personal cover /group-vs-personal-cover
xiaopoxian.com.sg Chinese Product landscape, how to read policy terms, claims and nomination /reading-policy-terms

Where to read the two reference benchmarks: the sum assured multiples in the Basic Financial Planning Guide published by MAS and the financial industry are covered at term.com.sg/sum-assured; versions of critical illness definitions are covered at term.com.sg/riders. Products launched from 1 October 2025 must use the definitions in the LIA Critical Illness Framework 2024 (LIA, 13 May 2025), so check which version applies when reading older policies.

Who needs to confirm: a licensed representative assesses the sum assured and rider combination against your personal finances; the underwriting decision is made by the insurer.

Topic 2: Savings and investment-linked policies

Why it comes second: These policies combine protection with savings or investment. Judging them assumes you already know your protection needs and can tell the guaranteed parts from the non-guaranteed parts. Seven sites in the network share this topic, which makes it the easiest to get lost in; we suggest reading in the order "savings → investment-linked → indexed and variable universal life".

Site Angle Read first You should then be able to answer
savings.sg Where savings plans fit in overall cash management /savings-insurance-role The trade-offs between savings plans and fixed deposits, T-bills and Singapore Savings Bonds (SSBs)
saving.sg Participating endowments, annuities, education savings /participating-endowment The guaranteed and non-guaranteed benefits of participating endowments
saving.com.sg English; how to read a benefit illustration /how-to-read-a-benefit-illustration What each column in the illustration means
ilp.com.sg ILP structure and charges /charges How charges are deducted by cancelling units
iul.com.sg IUL crediting mechanism /caps-floors How caps, participation rates and floors affect crediting
vul.sg VUL structure and sub-accounts /guarantees Which parts of a VUL are guaranteed and which are not
vul.com.sg English; due diligence /due-diligence-checklist The checklist advisers use to review a VUL

Key rules (only the three relevant to "how to read the documents"):

  1. Since 1 July 2021, illustrated rates for Singapore-dollar participating policies have been capped at 4.25% p.a. at the upper end and 3.00% p.a. at the lower end (LIA, announced 2 June 2021). Illustrated rates are assumptions only; they neither affect nor represent actual returns.
  2. The main Policy Illustration for an ILP shows three investment return scenarios, 0%, B% and C%, with the 0% scenario used to show the effect of charges. "Total Distribution Cost" must be shown year by year and is already included in the premium rather than charged on top (LIA MU 22/24 Appendix IV(b), 28 July 2026).
  3. ILP charges include the premium allocation rate, Cost of Insurance, fund management fees, policy and administration fees, surrender charges, the bid-offer spread (typically around 5%, according to MoneySense) and fund switching fees; charges may not be guaranteed and can be revised (MoneySense, updated 28 September 2026).

Who needs to confirm: the charges table, illustration and fund choices for a specific product are governed by the insurer's Product Summary and Benefit Illustration, and are explained by a licensed representative.

Topic 3: Jumbo life and premium financing

Why it comes last: The structure of jumbo life cover (usually high sum assured IUL, VUL or multiplier whole life) can be understood on its own, but once premium financing is layered on, any judgement depends on three things at once: the cash value curve, the loan terms and your personal liquidity. Readers who go straight to financing without a firm grasp of the first two topics easily see only the "leverage" and miss the risks.

Site Questions covered Read first
iul.sg (live) Profiles of Singapore IUL products, like-for-like comparisons, premium financing and the application process /compare, /premium-financing
wholelife.com.sg Multiplier and limited pay whole life /multiplier
vul.sg Premium financing and underwriting for VUL /premium-financing, /underwriting
hnwsolution.sg The financing component of HNW insurance solutions /premium-financing
privatebanking.hk Premium financing and Lombard loans from a private banking perspective /premium-financing

Risk framework: Singapore has no mandatory document called a "premium financing Important Facts Statement". The risks listed in the HKMA's "Important Facts Statement – Premium Financing" (1 April 2022) are a useful reference: premium financing is an arrangement between the policyholder and the lender that is separate from the insurance contract; once policy rights are assigned to the lender, surrenders, withdrawals and changes of beneficiary require its consent; the actual net benefit after financing will be lower than the benefit illustration; and the lender may require additional collateral or early repayment, failing which it may exercise its rights over the policy. In Singapore the specific terms are governed by the loan agreement and assignment documents, and financing is approved by lenders under their own credit policies.

Who needs to confirm: the bank explains the loan terms; a licensed representative explains the policy structure; a lawyer or tax adviser confirms source of funds and cross-border tax.

Where to go for comparisons

This site gives no product parameters. When you need to compare, go straight to the page responsible for that comparison and note the basis it uses.

Consumer protection and verification common to all three topics

The following rules apply equally to protection, savings and investment-linked policies, and are worth knowing before you read any of the topics.

Rule What it says Institution and date
Free-look period At least 14 days from receipt of the policy documents, except for travel, car and maid insurance; cancelling refunds premiums, but costs already incurred such as medical examinations may be deducted, and ILP refunds may also reflect changes in market value MoneySense, updated 11 May 2026
Policy Owners' Protection (PPF) Scheme For individual life policies, guaranteed sums assured are protected up to S$500,000 and guaranteed surrender values up to S$100,000 per insured life per insurer; ILP and other benefits linked to fund values are not covered SDIC, page as at October 2026
Dispute resolution Lodging a dispute and mediation are free; individuals pay a S$50 case fee at the adjudication stage; for disputes lodged from 1 July 2024, adjudication awards are capped at S$150,000 per claim FIDReC Terms of Reference v2.2 (1 July 2025)
Hong Kong comparison The cooling-off period for Hong Kong life policies is 21 calendar days Hong Kong IA GL29

Order of verification: first confirm the licence of the insurer or advisory firm in the MAS Financial Institutions Directory (FID), then confirm the individual representative in the Financial Institution Representatives Register (FIRR); product information can be looked up on LIA's compareFIRST. Step-by-step guidance is at xiaopoxian.com.sg/regulation and in this site's methodology.

Common mistakes in reading order

  1. Looking at illustrated returns before working out the protection gap. Result: high cash value but too little cover. Start with the sum assured page on term.com.sg.
  2. Treating participating bonuses as guaranteed benefits. Result: overly high expectations of surrender value. Start with the bonuses page on wholelife.com.sg and separate the guaranteed and non-guaranteed columns.
  3. Comparing only the illustrated figures of IUL and VUL. Result: missing the differences in who bears the risk and how charges are structured. Start with the crediting mechanism on iul.com.sg and the sub-account structure on vul.sg.
  4. Discussing loan-to-value before looking at the surrender curve. Result: margin calls when interest rates rise or cash values fall short of expectations. Start with the risk framework in Topic 3.
  5. Assuming cancellation during the free-look period costs nothing. Result: underestimating medical examination costs or ILP market value changes. Read the free-look rules before applying.

The reading order on this page only describes the questions usually worth understanding; it is not a recommendation of any product or structure. If you would like help interpreting this against your own circumstances, you can register your needs through the contact details on this site.
